Without animal research and the knowledged gained, they wouldn't even know what to set up the simulation for. Ok, maybe receptive field research is on it's way into artificial intellegence, but there are so many other fields of research that still depend on animals. The fact that one researcher gave in means that so many others are vulnerable.

Yep yep. Of course.
I'm torn about this kind of thing. I like the idea of vegetarianism, and try to not eat meat in general, though I still eat a fair amount (not as much as I used to).

Are we evolved to eat meat? Yes.

Have we advanced technologically to a point where we don't need to? Yes.

So why not do what we can and minimize the amount of suffering we can? Are plants alive? Yes. Are they as sentient as animals? Probably not. So eat fewer animals and minimize suffering.

The same goes for animal research. The animal research has taught us a lot. We're getting closer to a day when we can model the animal system well enough we don't need to do animal research.

Eventually, science will be able to minimize this kind of suffering, too.

I hope so.
